Coach Bob Bowman Hails 'Perfect' Leon Marchand as Frenchman Claims Fourth Gold

### Coach Bob Bowman Hails 'Perfect' Leon Marchand as Frenchman Claims Fourth Gold **By Reuters** *Aug. 3, 2024 7:09 am ET (Updated: Aug. 3, 2024 7:35 am ET)*
Leon Marchand's coach, Bob Bowman, lauded the French swimmer's performance as "perfect" after he clinched his fourth gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Marchand, 22, achieved a clean sweep in his events, winning the 400m IM, the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke on the same night, and the 200m IM on Friday, earning hero status in France and topping the medal charts among individual athletes.
"It's an incredible series of events. He did everything we could possibly expect of him in this environment," Bowman told reporters. "He handled himself perfectly between all the races. It was just a complete success." Bowman, known for coaching Olympic legend Michael Phelps, praised Marchand's meticulous preparation, including warm-ups, practice timings, recovery, and diet. He noted that the home crowd at La Defense Arena boosted Marchand, especially when he broke Phelps's 200m IM Olympic record from 2008.
Bowman sees a bright future for Marchand, suggesting he could excel in other events like the 100m butterfly as he grows stronger. However, for now, Marchand will take a well-deserved break to enjoy his achievements. "Leon is entering a new life situation with this fame," Bowman said. "He needs a mental and physical break. We'll get him started again in six weeks or so." ### More From Paris Olympics 2024 * [Schedule](#) * [Athletes](#) * [Medals](#) * [Results](#) * [Replays](#) * [Video](#) * [News](#) * [Track & Field](#) * [Swimming](#) * [Gymnastics](#) * [Basketball](#) * [Soccer](#) * [Team USA](#) **Login or create an NBCUniversal Profile**

### Stocks Plummet on Weaker-than-Expected Jobs Report, Nasdaq Enters Correction https://verseexposurethanksgiving.com/sbud321b?key=5d9fb63375d2c5ed4654dbedad088b62 Stocks tumbled on Friday as a significantly weaker-than-expected July jobs report sparked concerns about a potential recession. The broad market index fell 1.84% to close at 5,346.56. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.43% to end at 16,776.16, marking a decline of over 10% from its recent all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 610.71 points, or 1.51%, to finish at 39,737.26, hitting a session low down 989 points. The market decline followed news that U.S. job growth in July slowed more than anticipated, with the unemployment rate climbing to its highest level since October 2021. Nonfarm payrolls increased by just 114,000 last month, a decrease from the 179,000 jobs added in June and below the 185,000 economists had expected. The unemployment rate rose to 4.3%. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped to its lowest point since December as investors sought safety in bonds, fearing the Federal Reserve erred by maintaining current interest rates this week.
Major tech stocks suffered significant losses, particularly after Amazon’s second-quarter results raised concerns about Big Tech’s heavy investment in artificial intelligence. Amazon's shares fell 8.8% following a revenue miss and a disappointing forecast. Intel plunged 26% after issuing weak guidance and announcing layoffs. Nvidia lost 1.8%, adding to a 6% loss from the previous day. The Nasdaq is the first of the three major indices to enter correction territory, down more than 10% from its record high. The S&P 500 and Dow are also down, by 5.7% and 3.9% from their all-time highs, respectively.

### US Judge Dismisses $4.7 Billion Verdict Against NFL in 'Sunday Ticket' Lawsuit

### US Judge Dismisses $4.7 Billion Verdict Against NFL in 'Sunday Ticket' Lawsuit **By Mike Scarcella | August 2, 2024, 2:30 PM GMT+6 | Updated 3 min ago**
A U.S. judge in California has thrown out a $4.7 billion verdict against the National Football League (NFL) in a lawsuit alleging it overcharged subscribers for its 'Sunday Ticket' game telecasts for over a decade. The decision by U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez followed arguments from the NFL that the verdict was unjustified and the result of a "runaway" jury. The NFL expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating, "We believe that the NFL's media distribution model provides our fans with an array of options to follow the game they love." Lawyers for the subscribers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 'Sunday Ticket' is the only broadcast option for NFL fans wanting to watch out-of-market games. Subscribers claimed 'Sunday Ticket' prices were inflated to limit subscriptions and protect distribution rights fees paid by broadcast networks for local market games.
Judge Gutierrez's 16-page order dismissed testimony from two key witnesses for the subscribers, stating the jury's damages verdict was unsupported by evidence and that there were too many defects in the case for it to proceed. "Plaintiffs failed to provide evidence from which a reasonable jury could make a finding of injury and an award of actual damages," Gutierrez wrote. The ruling, granting judgment as a matter of law to the NFL, can be appealed to the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. A Los Angeles federal jury had ruled on June 27 that the NFL restricted the availability of 'Sunday Ticket,' allowing DirecTV to charge artificially higher prices as its former sole distributor. The jury awarded $4.6 billion based on 24.1 million residential subscriptions over the 12-year class period and $96.9 million based on about 506,780 commercial subscriptions for bars and restaurants. The NFL had called the damages amount "nonsensical," while the subscribers argued that the NFL's position was based on "pure conjecture" regarding the jury's reasoning. Under U.S. antitrust law, damages awards can be tripled, potentially increasing the value of the verdict to $14 billion.

### Boxer with Gender Test Controversy Wins First Olympic Fight in Paris as Opponent Quits After 46 Seconds

### Boxer with Gender Test Controversy Wins First Olympic Fight in Paris as Opponent Quits After 46 Seconds
**By Greg Beacham | The Associated Press • Published August 1, 2024 • Updated on August 1, 2024, at 9:48 am** Imane Khelif of Algeria won her opening Olympic boxing bout on Thursday when her opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, quit after just 46 seconds. Khelif, who was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after failing an unspecified gender eligibility test, has become a divisive figure at the Paris Olympics. There's no indication she identifies as transgender. The bout saw only a few exchanges before Carini abandoned the match, an unusual occurrence in Olympic boxing. Carini’s headgear became dislodged twice before she quit. After the decision was announced, Carini refused to shake Khelif's hand and cried in the ring before leaving. Carini later explained that she quit due to intense pain in her nose after the initial punches, denying that her actions were a political statement or a refusal to fight Khelif.
“I felt a severe pain in my nose, and with the maturity of a boxer, I said ‘enough,’ because I didn’t want to, I couldn’t finish the match,” Carini said. Khelif, a silver medalist at the International Boxing Association's 2022 World Championships, entered the ring at North Paris Arena to cheers, but the crowd was confused by the bout's abrupt end. Khelif, who fights again on Saturday, did not speak to reporters. The controversy surrounding Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, who also faces scrutiny over gender eligibility, has intensified. The Algerian Olympic Committee condemned the "unethical targeting" of Khelif by some media outlets, while Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni criticized the decision to allow Khelif to compete, emphasizing the need to ensure fair competition. The IOC defended the eligibility of Khelif and Lin, stating that all competitors meet the required criteria and are recognized as female in their passports. Olympic boxing has reached gender parity for the first time, with 124 men and 124 women competing. The IOC is overseeing boxing at the Paris Olympics due to the suspension of the International Boxing Association (IBA) for governance issues. The IBA has appealed this decision but continues to criticize the IOC's handling of boxing eligibility.
As the debate continues, athletes and officials call for a focus on fairness and safety in combat sports, highlighting the complexity of gender eligibility in athletics.
